Nature conservation area Kendlmühlfilze

Last week-end I stopped at Grassau close to the Chiemsee (large lake in Bavaria). I wanted to do a 2 hour tour through a nature conservation area. To the North of Grassau you can find a very special natural gem: Kendlmühlfilze. It is the largest high moorland in the South-East Bavarian region.

In the past farmers have cut peat there, later machines have been used to cut peat in large scale. There even was a railway.

To be able to cut peat the moors were drained. Large drainage ditches were dug (up to 3 m deep and 10 m in width). Can you see the silver band in the photo below? This was one of the former ditches that are nowadays blocked for renaturation.

There is a path guiding in a round through the high moorland. It is nice and calm, a beautiful walk.
