Eggstätt lake district - relicts of Ice Age

On the week-end I visited the Eggstätt-Hemhofer lake district in the North-West of Chiemsee, Bavaria. It is characterized by the last Ice Age: glaciers furrowed the surface, leaving rock heaps and blocks of ice. After the ice-disintegration many hills and hollows remained which filled with water. To date, we see the remnants in form of lakes, marshes, dead ice holes, lowland forests, low and high moors, streams and ponds. Part of the area is one of Bavaria's oldest nature conservation area.

Today there are 17 lakes and you can take nice tours walking from lake to lake. You can watch lots of birds, insects, plants. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine and a really nice round tour. The photos cannot give credit to the nice atmosphere there.
