This cultivar was created in 1968 in the first time of hybridation.

This is mine...but I've lost them this year, I don't know why...

The first hybridisation was much before, when African violets were first imported to Europe. On many places you can read that the first seeds that were send to Europe were of S. ionantha, but already bach then there was a second species involved as well. This was so confusing that it is called Saintpaulia confusa. So most of our cultivars are probably hybrids between S. ionantha and S. confusa. As far as I onderstand it Pixie Blue (and the later trailers) were developed by hybridising with S. grotei.

These 3 wild plants are all so similar that they are now seen as subspecies and forms of S. ionantha:
S. ionantha ssp. ionantha
S. ionantha ssp. grotei
S. ionantha ssp. grotei clone Confusa

I personally like Pixie Pink more than Pixie Blue, Pixie Blue is the smaller of the two.

To me these old "dropper" cultivars are actually more interesting than many of the showy modern ones, because the old varieties are closer to the wild species. Also, they are part of our "violet-cultural-heritage". I grew Pixie Blue for a while but stopped growing it to make more place for wild violets (and hopefully one time some of the even older cultivars). But I still have Pixie Pink and will post a picture in some time.
