Full scientific name: Saintpaulia rupicola

Single light-medium blue, three or more per peduncle. Light-medium green, heart-shaped, soft, smooth, glossy, velvety/light back. Leaves sometimes thick. Multi-crowned standard or Bushy trailer.

I read somewhere that there are only 4 small natural localities with this plant left, but I am not sure where this information comes from. It's a very easy plant to grow. There are several similar clones grown of this species, identity and origin of these clones is not entirely clear (at least not to me). Mine is a multi-crowned standard (quite large), not a trailer. Adult plant size depends a lot on growing conditions, to my feeling more than with other species.

Cincinnati ZOO & Botanical Garden is selling these plants as part of a kit for "home in-vitro propagation". With the profit they support conservation projects of violets in nature. A nice way to both educate people (especially children) about modern plant growing techniques and about endangered species.

p.s. merry christmas everyone

That's very lovely, Diana. It seems to be a very free flowering plant.

Cheating here, as I got mine already in bloom - but it's such a lovely plant I wanted to share =)

I love those pale blueish flowers and deeply serrated leaves! =D

Very good pictures. I also have this variety, mine is still so small, I've just repotted it.
As I remember it has hairy leaves, isn't it?

p.s. avisrapax: S. rupicola is listed as a separate species by the AVSA, not as a subspecies of S. ionanta anim:
